Frequently asked questions

You've got questions. We've got answers.

What age range is the family history programs designed for?

Roots & Routes family history programs are organized by experience level rather than strict age ranges. The current offerings are beginner-level programs designed to be flexible for learners of different ages.

Future intermediate and advanced programs will guide learners into deeper genealogical research and historical investigation.

How long does it take to complete the family history programs?

The programs are designed to be flexible rather than tied to a strict schedule. Some families complete the activities over several weeks, while others spread them throughout a semester or school year. The materials are designed so learners can work at their own pace and revisit activities as new discoveries are made.

Do we need prior genealogy experience to begin?

No prior genealogy experience is required. Our current beginner-level programs introduce the foundations of family storytelling and personal history, making it easy for families to begin discovering and preserving their own stories.

Do we need access to historical records to use the programs?

No. Beginner-level activities focus on interviews, family photographs or heirlooms, and personal memories. As learners progress through more advanced courses, they may choose to explore historical records as part of their research plan.

What materials are included in the programs?

Programs include guided activities, commonly used family history forms, and a Parent Guide with teaching notes and suggestions. These materials help learners collect personal stories, explore photographs and family keepsakes, and organize their discoveries into meaningful narratives.

Can this be used by homeschool co-ops or groups?

Yes. The flexible format works well for individual learners, homeschool families, and co-op settings. Many families also find it to be a meaningful way to begin the school year, sparking interest in history and setting the tone for future studies.

How does the Starter Pack relate to the Storykeeping Toolkit?

The Family History Starter Pack and Storykeeping Toolkit are designed to work well together but can also be used independently. The free Starter Pack introduces the foundations of family storytelling and personal history, while the Storykeeping Toolkit provides a deeper set of activities for learners ready to explore their family history further.

Will additional family history programs be released?

Yes. Additional programs and resources are planned as the Roots & Routes family history series continues to grow.
