The Story Behind Roots & Routes

Roots & Routes Learning is built on more than 25 years of teaching, homeschooling, family history research, and educational travel. These experiences made something clear: the most powerful history lessons happen when we discover how the past connects to our own families and communities—and when we experience the places where history unfolded for ourselves.

Roots & Routes Learning was created to help families discover those same connections and experience history in a more meaningful way.

Our Approach

Roots & Routes programs combine narrative storytelling, maps, primary sources, and opportunities to experience historic places firsthand. Rather than simply memorizing names, dates, and events, families explore the towns, landscapes, and communities where history unfolded and discover how geography shaped the stories of the past.

We believe history starts at home. Families are encouraged to explore their own history and consider how the stories of their ancestors connect to the places and time periods they are studying. By tracing where their families lived and moved over time, they begin to see how historical events shaped real lives—including their own family's story.

At Roots & Routes Learning, history is more than a subject to study. It is an invitation to explore the people, places, and stories that shaped the world we live in.
