The Story Behind Roots & Routes
Roots & Routes Learning is built on more than 25 years of teaching, homeschooling, family history research, and educational travel. These experiences made something clear: the most powerful history lessons happen when learners discover how the past connects to their own families and communities—and when they see the places where history unfolded for themselves.
Roots & Routes Learning was created to help other families discover those same connections and experience history in a more personal way.
Our Approach
Roots & Routes courses combine narrative storytelling, maps, primary sources, and opportunities to explore historic places. Learners investigate the towns, landscapes, and communities where history actually unfolded, rather than simply memorizing names, dates, and events.
Learners are also encouraged to explore their own family history and consider how the stories of their ancestors connect to the history of the time and place they are studying. By tracing where their families lived and moved over time, students begin to see how historical events shaped real lives—including their own family’s story.
At Roots & Routes Learning, history is more than a subject to study. It is an invitation to explore the people, places, and stories that shape our understanding of the world.
